Ewell Lawson is Program Director at the Financial Research Institute (FRI), bringing extensive experience in utilities, government and association management, and policy leadership to the Institute. His expertise spans energy policy, regulatory frameworks, and infrastructure management.
Lawson has been recognized nationally for his contributions to public power and telecommunications policy. He received the Alan Richardson Statesmanship Award from the American Public Power Association (APPA) and was honored by the National Coalition for Local Internet Choice for his advocacy in broadband policy. As a member of the APPA Board of Directors from 2015-2018, he played a significant role in advancing utility sector interests.
Prior to joining FRI, Lawson held leadership positions with a multi-state association and public agency representing over 120 municipal utility providers offering electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, and broadband services. His professional background includes executive staff positions for several federal and state elected officials, complemented by his work as a leadership coach and governmental consultant.
Lawson earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the Truman School of Public Affairs and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the College of Arts and Science, both at the University of Missouri. He is a proud parent of two grown children and married to Dr. Shari Lawson, a professor of educational leadership at Columbia College. When not immersed in the world of energy policy, he enjoys genealogy, history, outdoor activities, and service to his church.
