Michael Backstrom is senior vice president of Regulatory Affairs for Southern California Edison, one of the nation’s largest electric utilities. He is responsible at the national and state levels for the company’s regulatory strategy, advocacy, and operations. This includes regulatory case management, environmental policy, pricing and rate design, tariffs, and cost recovery, among others.

Backstrom joined SCE in 2005 as an attorney in the legal department, responsible for regulatory proceedings before the California Public Utilities Commission. He has held several leadership positions, including vice president of Regulatory Policy, managing director of Energy and Environmental Policy, director of Customer Experience and director of the Office of the CEO at Edison International. In addition, he was a manager of federal policy in SCE’s Washington, D.C. office.

Previously, Backstrom was an associate in the Los Angeles office of Howrey LLP, where his practice focused on commercial litigation.

Backstrom serves as chair of the Board of the Alliance for Transportation Electrification. He is also a member of the Market Advisory Board for the California Heat Pump Partnership. Additionally, Backstrom is part of the Leadership Group for the Los Angeles Clean Tech Incubator’s Transportation Electrification Partnership.

Backstrom earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Pepperdine University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California.
